Los Angles, California quartet HERE LIES MAN announce their forthcoming fourth album Ritual Divination‘ today and share the lead single “I Told You (You Shall Die)” via audio/video stream.

Four albums in, the convenient and generalized catchphrase for HERE LIES MAN’s erudite sound — if Black Sabbath played Afrobeat — might seem a little played out. But ‘Ritual Divination‘ is perhaps the best rendering of the idea so far. Particularly on the Sabbath side of the equation: The guitars are heavier and more blues based than before, but the ancient rhythmic formula of the clave remains a constant.

“Musically it’s an opening up more to traditional rock elements,” says vocalist, guitarist, and cofounder Marcos Garcia, who also plays guitar in Antibalas. “It’s always been our intention to explore. And, as we travelled deeper into this musical landscape, new features revealed themselves.”

The L.A. based band comprised of Antibalas members have toured relentlessly following their breakout 2017 debut ‘Here Lies Man.’ Their second album, ‘You Will Know Nothing,’ and an EP, ‘Animal Noises‘, both followed in 2018. Third album ‘No Ground To Walk Upon‘ emerged in August 2019. All of them were crafted by Garcia and cofounder / drummer Geoff Mann (former Antibalas drummer and son of jazz musician Herbie Mann) in their L.A. studio between tours. ‘Ritual Divination‘ is their first album recorded as the full 4-piece band, including bassist JP Maramba and keyboardist Doug Organ.

Ritual Divination‘ continues with an ongoing concept of HERE LIES MAN playing the soundtrack to an imaginary movie, with each song being a scene. “It’s an inward psychedelic journey, the album is the trip,Garcia says. “The intention and purpose of the music is to create a sonic ritual to lift the veil of inner space and divine the true nature of reality.

Likewise, musically and sonically, the album is self-reflexive. “On this album the feel changes within a song,Garcia says. “Whereas before each song was meant to induce a trancelike state, now more of the songs have their own arc built in.” Similarly, the guitar sounds themselves herein eschew the fuzz pedals of previous recordings, going for the directness of pure amp overdrive and distortion using an interconnected rig of four amplifiers. And, here, the well-versed live band is able to record as a unit, giving it much more of a live and dynamic feel.

Rough Trade named the band’s self-titled debut in their prestigious Top 10 Albums of 2017. BBC 6 and Classic Rock Magazine deemed it among the year’s best, as well as countless other press outlets singing its praises. Each subsequent album furthered the band’s reputation for genre-smashing rhythmic experimentation, topping many year-end lists as well as earning features from countless metal and indie rock outlets, plus cover stories in weekly papers.

We’re very conscious of how the rhythms service the riffs,” Garcia explains. “Tony Iommi’s (Black Sabbath) innovation was to make the riff the organizing principle of a song. We are taking that same approach but employing a different organizing principle: For Iommi it was the blues, for us it comes directly from Africa.

Starbenders’ dazzling Witches Be Bitches is a celebration of the ‘dark and different’

Glorious singles continue to be pulled from Starbenders’ Love Potions album, and Witches Be Bitches is another triumph

Atlanta glam outfit Starbenders have spent much of 2020 releasing a series of dazzling singles from their Love Potions album, and the latest, Bitches Be Witches, is no different.

Released to mark humanity’s annual Halloween celebrations, Bitches Be Witches finds lead Starbender Kimi Shelter in captivating form, coming on like a gothic Stevie Nicks in the verses before the chorus explodes like some kind of triumphant melody bomb.

“Those accused of witchcraft were once burned at the stake,” explains Shelter. “Maybe they were a little different, more in tune than those around them, a touch more luminous. Although the use of fire is no longer utilised, the flames of fear and hate still burn bright.

“This song is a celebration of the dark and different. It’s also a reminder to anyone who’s listening that we can reject the black magic of words and actions meant to harm us. When we do, it’s returned to them. Bitches be witches.”

The video features a nun who’s clearly up to no good, the band playing in what might be a study borrowed from an Edwardian gentleman, and an actual exorcism. It finishes by cutting to a limited edition transparent purple vinyl copy of Love Potions, available now from the Sumerian store

Bitches Be Witches follows in the stack-heeled footsteps of Push, Can’t Cheat Time, Something Ain’t Right and Cover Me.

Like emo-rap and cute animals? Nothing, nowhere.’s new video has you covered

Nothing, nowhere.’s new single Blood is the only place you’ll see a rapper with a chinchilla on their head today

Following the release of new pop punk-inflected track pretend just last month, emo rapper and musician nothing, nowhere. just dropped new single blood, featuring artist KennyHoopla and rising producer JUDGE.

While all those ultra-stylised track and artist names can be a bit of a mouthful (and sometimes read like typos), blood is a straightforward, fun, quietly eerie emo track with a catchy pop chorus. nothing, nowhere. – born Joe Mulherin – started his career on SoundCloud in 2015 before releasing a slew of successful EPs, full-length debut The Nothing,Nowhere LP and commercial breakout Reaper, an album of guitar-led emo rap released on Pete Wentz’s DCD2. He was then signed to Fueled By Ramen in 2018 for third album Ruiner.

Reaper, which featured vocals from Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional on track Hopes Up, saw nothing, nowhere. get recognised more widely, with praise from the New York Times. blood, which includes a verse and screamed sections from artist KennyHoopla, born Kenneth La’Ron, was released via Fueled By Ramen today. It’s accompanied by a video directed by Mason Mercer which follows nothing, nowhere. and KennyHoopla on a “covert mission” into an illicit black market.

Speaking to us about the track, Joe said: “I wrote this song in 15 or 20 mins in LA when JUDGE showed me the instrumental. I had this idea of writing a song about a killer, but instead of it literally being about killing someone, it’s about killing a relationship with someone you care about and getting stuck in that loop. I wanted to take the song to the next level so I hit up KennyHoopla and he just made the song that much better. I’m proud of this one.”

In a release, he said: “blood is about being a metaphorical killer; killing relationships with people you care about and getting caught in that toxic cycle.” On the video, he added, “I shot the video with Kenny in Boston and we got to hang out with a bunch of rescue animals. It was a beautiful experience to be able to combine my love of animals, film and music into one shoot.”

blood is the latest in a string of promising releases for nothing, nowhere., following from standalone tracks pretend, lights 4444, and the One Takes Vol.1 EP, a digital compilation of reworked versions of his tracks. His last EP, bloodlust – a collaboration with Blink 182’s Travis Barker – was released late last year.

The highly prolific artist is pretty hard to keep track of, but here’s hoping we’ll see even more from him soon.

Jon Gomm announces socially distanced live UK dates for November

UK guitar virtuoso also announces postponed The Faintest Idea UK & Eire headline tour for Autumn 2021

Acclaimed acoustic guitar virtuoso Jon Gomm has announced a run of socially distanced live dates for November. Gomm has also postpone The Faintest Idea – UK & Eire headline tour to Autumn 2021. He recently announced an online launch gig for his recently released The Faintest Idea album on 15th November.

Tickets are Pay What You Want with donations of £20 or more receiving a signed The Faintest Idea CD, a signed art postcard and souvenir plectrums.

“It’s not unexpected, but I’m still crushed to announce that I’m having to reschedule The Faintest Idea UK/Eire Tour,” he says. “New dates are all set up for Autumn/Winter 2021, and tickets on sale (if you already have a ticket for one of the gigs, it’s transferable).

“However, I am desperate to play these new songs. They don’t feel completely born until I’ve physically felt a human reaction to them. So I’m doing a short run of very limited Social Distance Gigs in the coming weeks (there were more booked, but some have fallen to new lockdowns before we could even announce them), and an Online Album Launch Gig on November 15th.

“I can’t help but feel angry with those governments who have let their ideological obsession with the free-market overrule public health, and so ruined both. It’s a macro version of the exact same heedless dollar-chasing which unlocked a vault of rainforest pathogens and spilled it into a city street.”

Gomm recently took a shot at television talent shows with his latest video for Dream Factories.
