Today we’re talking about the album that unquestionably deserves your full attention. Under Tension is a second full-length recording by The Drowns, a street punk/Oi! group originating from Seattle, Washington. This material was heavily promoted through a series of great singles, such as Demons, Hold Fast/Demons, Black Lung, The Sound, and Wolves On The Throne. The group doesn’t stop there, so they did videos for Hold Fast, Black Lung, and Them Rats. Judging by their involvement and dedication, there’s no wonder why their fanbase rapidly grows on social media, and the interest of the punk rock community about The Drowns increases each day.

Their approach to street punk music is so melodic, distinctive, and undoubtfully refreshing. The group paid attention to every aspect of the record, and every composition carries loads of details you surely don’t want to miss out if you’re a die-hard fan of street punk music. The amount of thoughtfully arranged melodic themes is nearly mindblowing, and each number includes some special maneuvers that are forcing you to dig deeper into the engaging sound of The Drowns even more. The guitars are offering more than you can grasp in one sitting through various dualities. The rhythm guitar provides building elements through rock’n’roll driven street punk chord progressions, while the lead guitar fills in with beautiful melodic sequences. Every segment is thoughtfully composed to satisfy even the pickiest admirers of this specific genre.

The beautiful low-end sounds of the bass guitar are liberating warm-sounding tones to the atmosphere. These basslines are providing massive foundations to the guitars but also fulfilling the gaps between guitars and excellent drumming performance. The drummer offers loads of entertainment through classic moderate rhythms, various accentuations, and drum fills. His performance keeps the remaining portion of The Drowns in line and offers tremendous dynamics throughout the entire recording. Every instrument is equally hearable in the mix, and I dig how the basslines are vividly hearable during the album.

The Drowns are dealing with various topics in their songs, and you may encounter the numbers about the current political climate in the States, corrupted politicians stealing everything from the working class, but you can stumble upon on compositions about love, relationships, friendships, personal struggles, drinking, dignity, and unity. The lyrics are very personal, and they’re representing either the stances of the author or the entire group. Whatever may be the case, these lyrics are going great with presented melodies.

Under Tension comes in a couple of variants, such as standard black vinyl limited to 1000 copies, blood-red vinyl limited to 500, white vinyl limited to 300, and blood-red w/black spokes limited to 200. The album is also available on compact disc and streaming services. Head over to Pirates Press Records web store for more detailed information about ordering this masterpiece.
